NORTH TEXAS Smoking marlboro or using chewing tobacco will soon be banned at more than a dozen hospitals from Dallas to Fort Worth. The largest health care system in North Texas will soon prohibit tobacco products at any of their hospital and corporate facilities. Starting November 15 the use of tobacco products will be banned at every property owned by Texas Health Resources (THR). The policy affects six Presbyterian Hospitals in Dallas, Arlington Memorial and six Harris Methodist facilities in Fort Worth. "Our policy will be to politely inform them of what our policy is and there will be signage that says that we are a smoke free campus. But we don’t regard ourselves as the tobacco police," Rachel Raya, of THR told CBS 11 News. The smoking and smoke free tobacco ban will apply to employees, patients, physicians and visitors at THR properties. The ban prohibits tobacco use in hospital buildings, parking lots, and in personal vehicles on hospital campuses. Business owner Lee Johnson says private property must be respected, but have some limits. "I would say, unless they want to make my car payment, you ought to be able to smoke in your car," he said. ?By making its hospitals completely tobacco free, THR is addressing the number one health risk today,? Douglas D. Hawthorne, CEO of THR said in a released statement. ?As the leading health care provider in North Texas, THR has a responsibility to promote healthy living to all members of the community. We cannot convince others of the need to eliminate smoking without becoming a model ourselves. It is the right thing to do.?
