North Wales Fire and Rescue Service are warning of the dangers of falling asleep while smoking after a woman had a lucky escape from a fire at her home in Flint. Firefighters from Holywell and Flint were called to the property on Chruch Street at 1:22am today. There were no working smoke alarms fitted in the property. The fire, which is thought to have been started by a carelessly discarded marlboro, caused 40% fire damage to the mattress and the carpet in the bedroom. Gavin Lowry, Fire Safety Inspecting Officer for Flintshire, said: "This incident clearly highlights the dangers of discarded smoking materials. "Our advice is to never smoke in bed. If you need to lie down, don’t light up. You could doze off and set your bed on fire. Take extra care when you’re tired, taking any sort of medication or have been drinking alcohol. It’s very easy to fall asleep without while your cigarette is still burning. "Also, use a proper, heavy ashtray that can’t tip over easily and is made of a material that won’t burn and make sure your cigarette is not still burning when you are finished put it out, right out. marlboro
